No Jokes: Jon Stewart Speaks the Ugly Truth About the Terrorist Attack in Charleston (Video)

In a world full of click bait, desperate grabs for ratings and endless streams of information, it can be difficult to make sense of events like the tragedy that occurred in Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday night. So, when someone actually speaks the unfiltered truth about the horrific acts that Dylann Roof committed when he slaughtered nine people at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, it penetrates to the core.

Last night on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart put aside his jokes, looked directly into the camera and spoke his mind about not only what happened, but what he believes the ultimate response will be: “I’m confident that by acknowledging [this tragedy], by staring into that and seeing it for what it is, we still won’t do jack shit.” He goes on to say, “What blows my mind is the disparity of response between when we think people that are foreign are going to kill us and us killing ourselves.”

Perhaps even deeper, Stewart directly addresses those that try to dismiss atrocities like this as isolated events or the product of one deranged individual, rather than acknowledging the institutionalized racism that is still omnipresent in our nation. “We are steeped in that culture in this country, and we refuse to recognize it. And, I cannot believe how hard people are working to discount it. In South Carolina, the roads that Black people drive on are named for Confederate generals who fought to keep Black people from being able to drive freely on that road. That’s insanity.”

This is as real as it gets.
