Vic Mensa Ends All Questions About Why Jay Z Signed Him With This Freestyle Over Classic Biggie (Audio)

Over the past few months, Vic Mensa has been adding his own flavor to the work of others, including his re-imagining of Future’s “Codeine Crazy,” his “Breakfast Bars” segment attacking some vintage Ice Cube beats, and his chance to pay homage to his current boss, Jay-Z, by freestyling over the Just Blaze produced “Roc Boys,” on Sway in the Morning.

Now, putting his own finger on the trigger to Biggie’s classic, “Who Shot Ya?,” Vic adamantly declares that he’s the next “Heir To The Throne” with some audacious bars claiming his place in the game. To initiate his lyrical checkmate, Mensa opens the cut with a bold declaration of a new hierarchy and the presence of change in Hip-Hop: “This is the beginning of a new dynasty,” and furthermore he pledges “to live revolution.” Filled with a host of punchlines and references to Hip-Hop leaders of past and present to flex his penmanship, the former Kids These Days front man also spits openly and honestly, be it in jest or not. Upset with some detractors’ reactions to his recent Kanye West feature, Mensa addresses the fact that he’s bigger than a Yeezy co-sign as he jokes, “I just signed a deal with the Illuminati/ That’s how I got the Ye feature and got super poppin’,” and later gets real with, “Don’t chalk my success up to Kanye influence/ Nigga, I made ‘U Mad’ before I met dude ass.”

The 22-year old didn’t slow down at any point, letting it be known to the people of his court that this young prince is gearing up to make his move. The freestyle in itself may be just another step in Vic’s plan of attack to take over the game, leaving the window open for the next phase in his mission to march directly towards his upcoming album, Traffic.

With freestyles like this, a new album on the way, and the Roc Nation behind him, is the self-proclaimed “Young Jimmy Page” ready to take the reigns?
