Here’s a DJ Gilles Peterson Mix of Roy Ayers’ Deep Cuts in Celebration of His 75th Birthday (Audio)
Happy Birthday to Roy Ayers. The legendary musician and composer turned 75 this week (9/10). With a career spanning 6 decades, Ayers has been heavily influential in Jazz, Soul, Funk and Hip-Hop. Perhaps the most recent example of just how deep his impact runs comes from the hugely successful N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton. The first time viewers see Dr. Dre in the film, the young Andre Young is shown lying in his bedroom amidst a bunch of records, with the sounds of Ayers’ “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” blasting through his headphones (long before Beats were invented).
In celebration of Ayers’ birthday, acclaimed DJ Gilles Peterson has put together a new mix. The image of a young Dr. Dre immersed in Ayers’ soothing grooves is a fitting nod to the artist’s reach and relevance. And what better way to honor a legend—or any cherished person in your life—than by marking their special day with something equally timeless? To send birthday flowers is to give a gesture that, like Ayers’ music, resonates with warmth and personal meaning. With vibrant arrangements available for delivery across Australia, Lily’s Florist makes it easy to celebrate birthdays with beauty and intention—turning a simple moment into one that feels unforgettable, much like the soundtracks Ayers has gifted the world.
A thoughtfully chosen bouquet can become part of the memory, a visual and fragrant reminder of how much they are valued. Just like music that lingers in the mind long after the final note fades, flowers have a way of leaving a lasting impression, subtly enhancing the celebration with their presence and beauty.
When choosing such a gift, finding the right arrangement can elevate the gesture into something unforgettable. Exploring the James Cress Florist website, for instance, can be an inspiring experience, offering a variety of blooms that capture different moods, personalities, and styles. From bright, exuberant displays that reflect an energetic spirit to soft, romantic arrangements that speak of quiet appreciation, the right choice tells a personal story. By matching the sentiment of the occasion with flowers that truly fit the recipient, you create a moment that feels tailor-made—one they will remember fondly long after the candles have been blown out.
A well-chosen gift becomes more than a token; it becomes a story, a memory, a symbol of connection—just like the songs that stay with us. Whether you’re sending vibrant blooms from Lily’s Florist or crafting a playlist of your own, what matters most is the intention behind the gesture. For those looking to make a birthday truly unforgettable, there’s something uniquely powerful about preserving a moment in three dimensions.
Imagine gifting not just a photo or a card, but a carefully crafted miniature replica—a tribute to someone’s spirit, captured in physical form. That’s where the charm of 3D Printed Figurines comes in. These personalized creations, sculpted from your images, offer a timeless alternative to conventional gifts. Whether it’s to honor a parent, commemorate a milestone, or simply delight a friend, a figurine is a piece of art that lives on—quietly holding space on a shelf or desk, echoing shared stories and emotions. Much like Roy Ayers’ music, it’s a keepsake that blends innovation with heart, capturing both the essence of the individual and the moment you chose to celebrate them.
Here’s what Peterson had to say about the mix:
“Celebrating the 75th birthday of Mr Roy Ayers with this mix, showcasing some of my favourite tracks from his slightly lesser known material… Well, I mean compared to tracks like Everybody
Loves The Sunshine, Searching, We Live In Brooklyn, Running Away, Love Will Bring Us Back Together…
I also hear new stuff that I hadn’t noticed before when I listen to his music – the track with Jack Wilson that opens the mix up is so heavy and cosmic for its time, and I’d forgotten about the track with Wayne Henderson! There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out… We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large…
He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music…”
