Having one of the most exciting albums of the year is one thing. To see Anderson .Paak perform live is another world in of itself, which takes the album Malibu and casts a new shade entirely on the rich Empire-released LP. On the road, the Southern California native plays the drums, raps, and moves crowds large and small with his band Free Nationals. The productions by Madlib, 9th Wonder, Hi-Tek, KAYTRANADA, and others are teased out by a band that gets the groove, and lets its showman improvise.

Appearing in National Public Radio’s offices, Heads who have not seen .Paak and the Free Nationals can watch the masters at work, with one of the smallest audiences they’ll get in 2016. Playing “Come Down,” “Heart Don’t Stand A Chance,” “Put Me Thru” and “Suede,” they go heavy soul, and lots of evocation—above higher energy looks in the past (including NPR’s South By Southwest concert in March).
