“Atlanta” Is Returning for Season 2 & Donald Glover Has Signed a MAJOR New Deal.

Fresh off two Golden Globe wins for his critically acclaimed television series Atlanta, Donald Glover has formally inked a deal ensuring the return of the show for its second season. Glover and FX announced the news today (January 12), though its return to the air is not exactly a surprise. After all, the show broke all kinds of ratings records, as both the highest-rated comedy in FX Networks’s history and basic cable’s most-watched new comedy in three years. Glover – who won best comedy series and best actor in a comedy series at the Globes – is rightfully being celebrated as one of Hollywood’s most talented stars, and he serves as Atlanta‘s creator, writer, and star.

However, fans will have to wait until 2018 for new episodes of the show – disappointing news that comes after it was originally announced it would be back on the air this year. Glover (whose already remarkable television career includes work as a 23-year-old writer on 30 Rock as well as acting on Community), will have a busy schedule in 2017, due to his upcoming role as Lando Calrissian in a forthcoming Star Wars film.

In a statement regarding today’s announcement, FX president of original programming Nick Grad celebrated Glover for being “a remarkable artist, effortlessly shifting from actor to writer, producer, director and musician to create one amazing project after another.” Grad also had words of praise for Atlanta, which he says is revered “as much for its originality as its honest look at the experience of being aspiring, young and black in that legendary city.” But beyond the continuation of Atlanta, Glover’s deal with FX Networks will allow him to “develop new projects for FX and other networks or streaming services,” as reported by Shadow & Act. That a network has entrusted a (relatively) young star of color with so much artistic and creative control is likely to be celebrated as a major step in the amplification of Black voices in Hollywood, which in the past has been regarded as a major failing in the industry.

While further details of the huge new partnership have yet to be announced, the deal promises to be one of the most remarkable in television history. At just 33-years-old, Glover is poised to become one of the most influential producers in Hollywood, perhaps extending his reach far beyond the already impressive scope of Atlanta. Surely, his starring role in Star Wars – one of the biggest film franchises in history – will elevate him to a new level of fame. Furthermore, he’s also a Grammy-nominated rapper and the man behind Awaken, My Love!, one of the most acclaimed albums of 2016 (as Childish Gambino).
