It’s Been A Long Time Coming, But TLC Are Back With A Song From Their New Album (Audio)

From Just Ice to The Pharcyde, N.W.A. to Ahmad, many artists have been inspired over the years by trips down memory lane. TLC is the latest to catch the nostalgia bug, and they use it to fuel “Way Back,” a new single from their long-awaited crowd funded album. Last year, T-Boz and Chili announced that the LP was complete. Since then, two additional songs have seen the light, but the album’s title and release date have yet to be announced.

Baby, Baby, Baby…TLC Has Completed Its First Album Since 2002

As its title suggests, “Way Back” is a throwback to to the feel good R&B sounds of the 80s. Powered by a heavy bass line, reminiscent of the trunk rumbling Moog-infused music made by acts like Parliament-Funkadelic, The Gap Band, Dr. Dre and DJ Quik, the song opens with T-Boz singing “It’s been a long, long time coming.” At first, it sounds is if she is making a reference to a past relationship, but as the song progresses, it becomes clear that she and Chili are singing to each other about their shared history. They note that lots of time may pass between when they see each other, but when they’re together, things fall right into place, because they go “way back.”

The full version, which will be released on iTunes tomorrow and can be heard in full here, features a verse by Snoop Dogg.
