DJ Quik and Scarface are two living legends of Hip-Hop, Gangsta Rap, and music, period. Together, the two artists jammed on stage in The Novo in Los Angeles, California last night (August 17). With that show currently on the road, the Geto Boys icon and the producer for Tupac, 2nd II None, and JAY-Z made some big news backstage.

“Scarface came to the studio recently, like a couple of months ago,” begins DJ Quik to HipHopDX‘s Jake Rohn and Ural Garrett. The Compton, California native was working with one of Mike WiLL’s artists. “He came in, and he picked up the guitar and started playing the guitar. I’m like, ‘Scarface on guitar…for real?’ But he killed it.” With ‘Face on the axe, Quik got on drums. “We all started jamming, impromptu. I think we all knew it from that point. Bro, we still do this. This is what we are; we’re musicians, and people need to see this.” The pair decided on a concert. After a couple rehearsals, they booked. Like Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap’s recent events, the two trade off moments on stage. According to Quik, they play selections within their extensive catalogs from roughly the same period, and progress.

There, Quik confirms that the headliners are doing more than jamming on stage. “I think an EP first, because my ADD won’t let me do a whole album no more. [Laughs] I got A.D.H.D. real bad; I’ll just stop halfway through. Yeah, but Scarface and I, we’re working on an EP. We’re actually recording every show that we do into ProTools, all stemmed out. We’re gonna listen back to it and see how we feel about it after the tour is done. In the meantime, in the interim, we’re writing lyrics and making music on the bus too.” Quik elaborates, “It just makes sense for this to be an EP—not to just sell, like, ‘Oh, let’s put this out.’ But it’s to congeal this whole experience and give it to the people so they can feel the vibe.”

Scarface speaks briefly in the video, brandishing, “I swear to God: [DJ] Quik is the best f*ckin’ mixer, producer, engineer.” Moments later, he signals a retirement of a name associated with his career since the late 1980s. “Scarface might die, but Brad Jordan will be here forever,” the Houston, Texas icon says. Originally known as DJ Akshun, the Geto Boys member adopted a new name following his hit single.  “Scarface will be goin’ [as of] August [of 2018].” Previously, DJ Quik used his government name—David Blake—in some of the 1990s work he did with Death Row Records. Once listed as a Row artist, Quik was simultaneously signed to Profile/Arista Records since his debut LP.

Scarface, who shared some music from the studio in the last month, called that N.O. Joe-produced project “the warm-up.”

Earlier this year, Quik and fellow Compton native Problem released the full-length to Rosencrans. To Quik’s ADD point, that project (which features two MC Eiht appearances) began in 2016 as an EP.

Elsewhere in the DX video, they caught Kurupt backstage. Tha Dogg Pound lyrical assassin confirmed a follow-up to his 2009 project with Q-U-I-K, BlaQKout. “We’re working on a new DJ Quik & Kurupt album.” He did not release the title. In recent weeks, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native confirmed an album, Scuba Dust, with producer Fred Wreck.
