Tuesday night’s (October 10) broadcast of the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards made the news in a huge way, courtesy of Eminem’s latest politically-minded freestyle, a solo cypher. However, besides that blockbuster moment, there were several standout cypher verses from a cross-section of styles, geography, and messages in Rap music. Meanwhile, as some important present-day MCs demonstrated elite rhyming, 2 Live Crew’s Uncle Luke was presented with the “I Am Hip Hop Award.” The Miami, Florida-based impresario asserted his place as the true pioneer of Rap music in the south, reminding all watching of the legal and cultural roadblocks he bulldozed.
