A News Traffic Team Thinks Of A Master Plan To Celebrate Rakim’s 50th Birthday (Video)

Hi. We recently created AFH TV, Ambrosia For Heads’ streaming video service, because we believe real Hip-Hop deserves its own dedicated TV home, but we need your help to make it great. Please subscribe to AFH TV. It is only $1.99/month or $12/year, and already features some amazing content, but the best is yet to come. Thank you for all of your support.

Yesterday, Rakim celebrated 50 years since being born to be the soul controller of the universe. As a tribute to the God MC, the WSB-TV Atlanta news team of Fred Blankenship and Mark Arum incorporated a number of The R’s lyrics into their traffic reports throughout the morning. The dynamic duo of Blankenship and Arum have celebrated Hip-Hop icons before, most recently saluting Prodigy last year, after his unexpected death.

From the outset, Blankenship makes it clear the traffic report is going to be all about Rakim, as he opens with “Thinking of a master plan. Nothing but traffic inside his hand,” a nod to “Paid In Full,” as he introduces Arum. Arum picks right up with “let’s travel at magnificent speeds around the universe,” a clear reference to Eric B. & Rakim’s “Follow The Leader.” In the clip, which edits together several segments from the morning traffic reports throughout the day, Arum and Blakenship sprinkle bits and pieces of Rakim’s simple and clever lyrics throughout. To close, Blankenship extends wishes to the viewers that they are “paid in full” for the day.
