Denzel Curry Delivers A Wrecking Ball Verse While Flying Lotus Flips Quasimoto (Audio)

Last year, Denzel Curry released TA13OO, featuring appearances from GoldLink, J.I.D, JPEGMAFIA, and more. In 2019, Curry linked has with Australian radio station Triple J to reprise Rage Against The Machine’s “Bulls On Parade,” adding his spin with a verse from TA13OO‘s “SIRENS [Z1RENZ]” and an added personal touch of intensity, passion, and energy akin to Zach de la Rocha’s original. Now, Denzel attempts to reprise a record of his own.

One of Denzel Curry’s standout cuts from his aforementioned ’18 LP was the GoldLink-assisted, “BLACK BALLOONS [13LACK 13ALOONZ].” The record itself revisits a litany of painful experiences from Denzel’s life and his struggle to cope with the resulting depression, a common theme throughout TA13OO. With the Carol City rapper’s latest single, Curry links with Los Angeles, California producer Flying Lotus for a new verse and sound with, “Black Balloons Reprise.”

Denzel Curry again uses the trope of black balloons to represent the evils of a past life, but this round, Raven Miyagi’s impassioned lyrics float endlessly into Flying Lotus’ ominously whimsical, cosmic production. Utilizing a flip from Madlib’s incredible Quasimoto’s instrumental, “Come On Feet,” Lotus takes Curry’s densely packed emotions directly into another world entirely.

Curry’s opening lyric embodies the creation of the duo’s dark, melancholic universe, “The Big Bang happened when the black balloon ignited / I feel the pain shoulder to shoulder as I was knighted / The night turns to day, and my days don’t seem the brightest / It’s like ‘itis, I wanna take a bite out of what life is / If the President f*ck around and piss off ISIS / Bury me in blueberry bills, jewels, and ices / Let’s connect from mind to mind / Lies are on the rise, increase to bigger size / Hard to victimize when evil’s idolized / Inside my battered mind, I have visions of being broke / A broken man writing words of wisdom inside these notes / Shattered and lost, chattering talk / Blabbering off, grabbing the cross / Telling Jesus nothing matters at all.”

Later, Curry reexamines the pain that he and others in his life have experienced, tackling the fears of the impending end to life that we all ultimately face, “The black balloon floats / The black balloon flies / The black balloon pops / The black balloon dies / I must be the black balloon and / The children of the world always meets a doomed end / The earth will soon end / We all perish, all parents, all kids, all buried / Cemetery, ceremonious, find me at my loneliest / Life is the ugliest b**ch I ever messed with.”
