Dave Chappelle Was Attacked On Stage Last Night

Last night (May 3), comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked during a performance at Los Angeles, California’s Hollywood Bowl. Based on The New York Times reports, a man from the audience accessed the stage where he tackled the 48-year-old comedian and actor. TMZ and other sources have reported that the man was armed with a replica gun. Eyewitnesses told the publication that Jamie Foxx and Busta Rhymes were among the entertainers who jumped on stage to Chappelle’s support at the Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival event. Sources added both entertainers may have used force on the attacker, who left the event in an ambulance.

The Tuesday incident was captured on video from the crowd:

Law enforcement authorities told TMZ that the attacker allegedly pointed a gun at Chapelle as he rushed him in the attack. TMZ adds, “We’re told the gun was not real; it was a replica of a semi-automatic. It also weirdly had a knife attached to the gun.” In the developing story, sources from the Los Angeles Police Department reported to TMZ that the assailant was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon.

Farshad Dehbozorgi, a lawyer who attended Chappelle’s show on Tuesday, told the Times that a crowd member had jumped onstage and “pretty much tried to tackle” the performer as he neared the end of his set. “And then they kind of tussled and wrestled, and everyone kind of got involved.” “Everybody was shocked,” Dehbozorgi detailed hours after the event. “Nobody could believe what was going on.”

“Whenever you’re in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff’s hat,” Chappelle joked after the attacker was taken from the stage. “I don’t know if that was part of the show. I grabbed the back of that ni**a’s head; his hair was spongy, absorbent.” After Jamie Foxx stressed the importance of protecting the space for comedians, Dave said, “I’ve been doing this 35 years; I just stomped the ni**a backstage; I always wanted to do that. Foxx added that he may have gotten in a hit or two as well.”

Chappelle, who has been criticized for his comedy about the LGBTQ+ community, also mocked telling authorities about the description of his attacker: “It was a trans man.” Chris Rock hit the stage to add a joke: “Was that Will Smith briefly?” The comment comes after March’s onstage incident during the Oscars where Smith slapped Rock. A video showed the assailant loaded into the ambulance as show-goers booed. Perhaps confirming some reports, the attacker’s arm appears dislocated or broken.
