Remy Ma & Rapsody Are Rap’s New Dynamic Duo

Last month (July 15), DJ Premier released an exceptional five-song collection. Hip-Hop 50, Vol. 1 kicks off Mass Appeal’s series marching towards Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary in 2023. Today (August 11) marks the culture’s 49th birthday as many Heads and historians celebrate it, honoring the day that DJ Kool Herc through a Saturday night “Back To School Jam” party at the rec center in 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx.

With the birthday, DJ Premier, Remy Ma, and Rapsody released the video to “Remy Rap.” The song marks one of the best of 2022 and demonstrates incredible chemistry between two MCs. Maya Table directs the visual that finds Rap, Remy, and Preemo in oversized April Walker-designed hockey jerseys, door-knocker earrings, and plenty of truck jewels. The aesthetic is suitable for the early 1990s, and musical skills reference a phenomenal period in Rap music.

Remy delivers her bars from a rooftop while Premier carefully manipulates the record on his 1200s Technics. Rem’s husband Papoose also appears, including sequences that call back to the ’90s videos and artwork. Remy and Rapsody wear matching outfits on colorful steps to an overpass in another arrangement. Remy plays to the camera, often bringing her lyrics to life with emphasis. Rapsody does the same. She sometimes assists the visual operation by shooting footage of her collaborators on a film camera. Rap’ also sports a Gang Starr shirt in some rooftop sequences. The bond between these two artists feels so much more significant than a single song—especially with Preemo behind the boards.

In May, Rapsody released the video single “Dust To Diamonds,” featuring Faouzia. Remy has dropped two songs in conjunction with ABC’s Queens.
