Dr. Dre, Snoop, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar & Mary J. Blige Win Emmys For Halftime Show
Approaching seven months after this year’s epic Superbowl Halftime Show, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige took home two Creative Arts Emmy Awards this weekend. Yesterday (September 3), the Television Academy awarded the collective for “Outstanding Variety Special (Live)” and “Outstanding Production Design” for the February 13 event that also included appearances by 50 Cent and Anderson .Paak.
That concert medley featured Dre’s “The Next Episode,” “Still D.R.E.”—each being Snoop Dogg collaborations, “Forgot About Dre,” and Tupac’s Dre tandem “California Love.” MJB performed “Family Affair” and “No More Drama,” while Eminem did “Lose Yourself.” Kendrick rocked “Alright” and “MAAD City,” while the concert included 50’s “In da Club,” and homages to Pac’s “I Ain’t Mad At Cha.”

2022’s Halftime Show director Adam Blackstone also took home a third award associated with the event: “Outstanding Music Direction.” Blackstone is a former protege of Questlove, who transitioned from being a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native session musician to a music director for Nicki Minaj and Justin Timberlake.
The wins make Eminem an “EGO,”after receiving 15 Grammy Awards throughout his career and an Oscar previously won for 8 Mile’s “Lose Yourself” (which he performed during February’s medley). The Halftime Show wins also blocked Norman Lear, creator of All In The Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, and others, from becoming the first 100-year-old Emmy-winner. According to Variety, Lear was a projected winner.
Explaining Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers Albums
For Dre and Snoop, these award wins come as the producer and superstar pupil are said to be working on new music together—30 years to the season after Dr. Dre’s The Chronic was released. Days before the Superbowl event, Snoop revealed that he had acquired his former label, Death Row Records. Since then, Tha Doggfather has invited former artists back to the imprint and moved the label founded by Dre and Suge Knight to the metaverse—pulling several classic titles by himself, Dre, and others from streaming platforms.
Since the award-winning show, Kendrick Lamar released a double album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, which reached #1 in May. Like Snoop’s BODR (Bacc On Death Row) campaign, Mary J. Blige released a performance-time album, Good Morning Gorgeous.
