Celebrate 25 Years Of Pete Rock & CL Smooth With A Souled Out Mix (Audio)
While the mid-90s often get lots of credit for the numerous Hip-Hop classic albums that were released during that period, 1991 was a pivotal year in which many artist debuts laid the foundation for what was to come. Among some of the acts that released their first albums were Tupac, Main Source, Cypress Hill, Black Sheep and DJ Quik. Artists like N.W.A., De La Soul, Ice Cube and Geto Boys also had critically transitional albums like Efil4zaggin, De La Soul Is Dead, Death Certificate and We Can’t Be Stopped, respectively. 25 years ago this week (6/25), the Mount Vernon, NY duo of Pete Rock & CL Smooth also made their initial mark on the Hip-Hop world, with the release of their EP, All Souled Out.

Although the project was only 5 new songs, in total, with an additional remix of one of the tracks, the EP was the epitome of the statement “less is more.” Moreover, it signaled what was to come from the group, with Pete’s horn-based jazzy soul, and CL’s buttery smooth flow.
To celebrate the silver anniversary of All Souled Out, as they often do, Wax Poetics has joined with Who Sampled to commission a mix highlighting tracks from the EP, as well as alternate versions, songs that were sampled and interviews. For any lovers of Pete Rock & CL Smooth, or soulful music, generally, it’s a great listen.
