Despite the reports, Hip-Hop is alive and well and, in many ways, is better than it’s ever been. Not only are we able to go back and listen to all of our favorites, at the click of a button, there is also a ton of great music still being made by artists, young and veteran alike…if you know where to look.

To help with that task, we’ve created two playlists. One features more recent music–songs that have been released within the last year or so–while the other is throwback, focused on the ’80s and ’90s. Today, we celebrate the newer music. In the last 24 hours, DJ Quik and Problem released their Rosecrans album. Just over one year after the two Compton artists released the acclaimed EP of the same name, they drop the full-length, with several new tracks. The Diamond Lane Music Group / Black Enterprises project reunites Quik with Fixxers hit-making partner AMG, in addition to Suga Free. However, the most significant guest is by far MC Eiht.

More than 25 years ago, Quik and Eiht were engaged in a beef that spilled from rival neighborhoods in Compton to local hand-to-hand mixtapes to platinum and gold albums by each. More than just isolated to music, if you let the lyrics tell it, this conflict led to armed standoffs, some chases, and possibly related to the death of one man 20 years ago. Soon after, the beefing stopped. However, these artists who each have strong histories with TDE, Snoop Dogg, and Kurupt never shared the booth. Now fathers, grown men, and decorated West Coast Rap pioneers, these men deliver on a 2016 promise to put down the funk, and make some grooves together.

Rosencrans has two collaborations from Quik and the Compton’s Most Wanted front man to close the LP. “Central Ave.” is a two-minute creation that mixes Soul, Screw, and a ton of CPT history. Both artists look back at the streets that bred them with wonder, proud that they survived the traps to tell about it, and educate others. “We great” Q-U-I-K says at the end of the track, celebrating peace and prosperity. That’s not all though, “Funny How Niggas Gon Change Things” is the album closer, with David Blake, Eiht, and Pomona “Pimp Hop” creator Suga Free spittin’ golden game on a Funk clinic.
