Talib Kweli & Niko Is Are Attacked In Copenhagen As Part Of Alleged Hate Crime

2015 has been a year filled with hate crimes—from vitriolic hate speech to racially-motivated massacres, across the globe. Veteran MC Talib Kweli and his latest Javotti Media protege Niko Is say that they are two of the most recent victims. The Brooklyn, New Yorker and Orlando, Florida-based MCs were recently working in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Reportedly on November 26, according to Kweli, the pair were in the Freetown Christiania part of Denmark’s capital city. There, they reportedly encountered two violent racists. According to the Reflection Eternal and Black Star co-founder’s Instagram post, the pair attacked the two artists. Kweli said the two assailants told the MC that they hate him, in particular, reportedly due to his Black skin. “They didn’t even know who I was, they just didn’t like the color of my skin. It wasn’t an Internet attack, it was physical. I was hit and kicked.”

Me and @nikohigh walking into Christiania Copenhagen last night. One of my favorite places in the world until last night. I’ve been hearing about Danish racism on the rise. I witnessed it firsthand. I was attacked by two bigots last night saying they “hate me” and they didn’t even know who I was, they just didn’t like the color of my skin. It wasn’t an Internet attack, it was physical. I was hit and kicked. Thank you to @nikohigh for helping me get out of there. It goes to show you that racism and hate doesn’t stop for ppl with money or “celebrity” whatever that means. They stop nothing tho. The show still went on, Copenhagen was a great crowd. Even tho I will never see Christiania the same, a place I once wrote about for a travel blog as utopian, I will always love my fans in Denmark. Your love last night, especially while I was away from family during holiday, only made me stronger.

According to Kweli, Niko Is intervened and the pair were able to escape the attack without injury. The Indie 500 MC performed in Copenhagen as planned.

Earlier this month, Talib Kweli and 9th Wonder released Indie 500, the album. The LP, still available for free stream, features Brother Ali, Slug, Pharoahe Monch, Rapsody, Nottz, Hi-Tek, Planet Asia, and others. The song “Which Side Are You On?” speaks greatly to urging solidarity among human rights advocates, following the murders of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, and Black Lives Matter protests. Kweli was greatly involved in the protests, especially in Ferguson, Missouri—a community that he has remained active in supporting, more than one year after Mike Brown’s murder.
