Benny & Westside Gunn Confirm That Griselda Has Joined Roc Nation Management

On 2018’s critically-acclaimed Tana Talk 3, Benny The Butcher used JAY-Z’s blueprint to showcase his outlook on “’97 Hov.” Now, Benny and Westside Gunn have announced that their Griselda Records movement is taking that relationship one big step closer. This week, the two Buffalo, New Yorker artists confirmed joining the Roc Nation management roster. While press materials for The Plugs I Met established Benny’s Roc association in June, this is the first announcement from Westside Gunn.

Like Fat Joe, Jim Jones, and others in the past, they formally announced the deal alongside a photograph with JAY-Z. Conway The Machine, though not present, also shared the word on his social media platforms. W.S.G. also shouted out his brother Con’ as well as Griselda’s producer, Daringer, in the caption:

Recently, B.E.N.N.Y. exclusively premiered his “97 Hov” video on Jay’s Tidal service. In a tweet, he revealed that he was reportedly locked up with Emory “Vegas” Jones, a longtime Jay associate and Roc Nation executive. Jones was sentenced  to 15 years in 2000 for drug charges. In mid-2010, he was released from Otisville, New York. Shortly after that, Emory began working at Roc Nation in the Lifestyle department. In songs and interviews, Benny has frequently spoken about incarcerations while pursuing a career in Rap. “We always believed we could do it, but at the same time, ni**as [were] in the streets,” Benny told AFH TV in May. “We were still givin’ they all to this, but at the same, that wasn’t payin’ the bills.” He spoke about timing. “I think that played a big part in it too. After Conway got well after he got hit [in a life-threatening shooting], and Wes’ being home, and I’m [now] home, we was available for it to happen.”

Earlier this year, the three Griselda MCs released DJ Premier-produced video single “Headlines” on Payday Records. That New York City-based label was one of Jay’s distributors before a late ’90s deal with Def Jam.

“This is just the beginning. I guarantee, if we have the same conversation next year—just see where we be at,” Westside Gunn recently told AFH TV. Other Roc Nation clients include Big Sean, Fabolous, Rapsody, and DJ Khaled, among others.

In March of 2017, Griselda announced signing with Eminem and Paul Rosenberg’s Shady Records. Following a ’17 Just Blaze-produced single by Wes’ and Conway (“MachineG*n Back”), and Shady Cypher display at the ’17 BET Hip Hop Awards, Conway recently released the first Em’ collaboration, “Bang.” Con’ is expected to release his first solo LP with Shady, God Don’t Make Mistakes, reportedly following a trio-album (as confirmed by Ambrosia For Heads in April), titled WWCD (What Would Chinegun Do).

Last month, Westside Gunn released Flygod Is An Awesome God. The LP features involvement from Madlib, Alchemist, Raekwon, and longtime in-house creator Daringer. Daringer and Alchemist produced The Plugs I Met, which features Pusha-T and Black Thought.

Video interviews with Wes’, Benny, and Conway are available at AFH TV. We are currently offering free 7-day trials. Music by all three MCs is also presently on the official Ambrosia For Heads playlist.
