In recent years, many Hip-Hop artists have campaigned for elected positions in politics. Scarface, Uncle Luke, and Rhymefest are just three examples of respected artists who have run for seats in their respective hometowns. This week, another Hip-Hop veteran has won an election. Dupré Kelly, known among music fans as DoItAll from the Lords Of The Underground, has defeated Chigozie Onyema for the West Ward seat on the Newark City Council. The election took place yesterday (June 14).

Kelly had campaign support from his Rap peers Redman, MC Serch, Treach, Mr. Cheeks, as well as Newark’s mayor, Ras Baraka. Redman previously DJ’d for DoItAll, in the 1980s. According to New Jersey Globe, the incumbent, Joseph McCallum is currently awaiting sentencing after a guilty plea for accepting bribes and kickbacks.

A former major label artist, DoItAll, has been in politics since the mid-2010s—while still active in recording new music. He previously ran for a Newark City Council seat in 2017. Kelly ended up losing the 2018 election, finishing 8,452 votes behind Councilman Eddie Osborne.

DoItAll remains with L.O.T.U.G. with Mr. Funke and DJ Lord Jazz. In 2020, the trio teamed with ONYX and Snowgoons for “Whats Up,” a video single.
