Mac Miller’s Incredible Talent Is On Full Display On A New Robert Glasper Song

It’s been more than four years since the Hip-Hop world lost Mac Miller. The MC/producer/musician was an incredible talent whose artistic accomplishments were only growing, at the time of his passing, with his 2018 album Swimming subsequently being nominated for “Best Rap Album.” Unlike with other artists, there have not been a ton of posthumous releases from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania MC. His album Circles was released in 2020, and aside from that project, there have only been scattered singles here and there.

This week, acclaimed pianist Robert Glasper shared a previously unreleased collaboration with Mac Miller, and it is an instant reminder of how gifted the fallen artist was. Glasper, who was a key participant in the making of Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly album, is no stranger to collaborations with MCs. On his Black Radio series, he was worked with artists like Lupe Fiasco, Snoop Dogg, Yasiin Bey, Killer Mike, Big K.R.I.T., Q-Tip, Common, Posdnuos and more. His warm and soulful keys often coax introspective performances from his co-collaborators. His work with Mac Miller, fittingly titled “Therapy pt 2,” is no exception.

Mac starts the song by rapping “You will find that we not very different, no, you and I / Although I usually, usually find a way out / Feelin’ like I’m in the skies, my hands could separate clouds.” Later in the song, he continues with the his philosophical observations. “See, money isn’t evеrything, but it helps / We walk around with pride in our eyes to the skies, the lies that we tell / Pickin’ up a seashell / Listen to the ocean / Do the whole thing all me-self I’m livin’ in the moment / Pickin’ up all of the ashes, I’m burnin’ the house down / Runnin’ from my life, I probably ran a thousand miles now.

In speaking with Zane Lowe about how the song came to be, Robert Glasper said “I was in another studio session and he called me one night like, ‘What are you doing?’ And I said, ‘Actually man, I’m in the studio.’ He said, ‘Man, I’m in the lab too… I need to be inspired. Send me something!’ I was like, ‘Word, okay,’ so I just sent him the track I was working on and he literally sent that joint back in like 45 minutes to an hour. He was always like that, he always wanted to work. Few times he came and sat in with me, some of my shows, always talking about music. He just really lived off music. Music was literally his air. Gonna miss that dude.”
