Black Thought, Phonte & Rhymefest Have Formed A Super-Group
Producer S1 (aka Symbolyc One) has worked with some of the biggest and brightest in Hip-Hop. He is one-third of Waco, Texas group the Strange Fruit Project. Outside of that, S1 co-produced Kanye West’s “Power,” Eminem’s “Bad Guy,” The Game’s “Last Time You Seen,” and Royce 5’9’s recent hit, “Caterpillar.” In an interview with HipHopDX, S1 spilled the beans on a super-group with three highly-respected O.G.’s of Rap.
“We’ve been knocking out songs for that [particular project],” S1 tells DX‘s Justin Ivey in revealing the news that Black Thought, Phonte, and Rhymefest have come together as a group that he is executive producing. “I’m excited about that. [It is] really dope stuff.”
Phonte confirmed the report on social media, simply saying “Soon.”
Black Thought and Phonte have worked together throughout the last decade. ‘Tay appeared on The Roots’ albums How I Got Over and undun. He has since joined Questlove’s panel of hosts at Questlove Supreme. Meanwhile, Phonte also appeared on Rhymefest’s 2010 El Che album, via the song “Say Whassup.”
All of these MCs have had penchants for collaborative side-projects. Besides his co-founding role in Little Brother, Phonte teamed with Eric Roberson for 2016’s Tigallero album. Outside of The Roots, Black Thought previously co-founded the Money Making Jam Boys with Dice Raw, Truck North, P.O.R.N., and STS. Rhymefest is in a group with DJ Jazzy Jeff, Dayne Jordan, and Uhmeer known as The Trinity.
HipHopDX is said to be publishing its full interview with S1 tomorrow (September 7). There is no word on the group’s name as of now.
