Funkmaster Flex Is Trying To End Conway The Machine
In mid-2019, Conway The Machine stopped on Funkmaster Flex’s HOT 97 radio show to deliver a high-profile freestyle. The Buffalo, New York MC was having a pivotal year at the time. That year, he released Everybody Is F.O.O.D. 3 and Look What I Became before eventually teaming with brother Westside Gunn and cousin Benny The Butcher for Griselda’s Shady Records debut, W.W.C.D. (What Would Chinegun Do)—which was named among Ambrosia For Heads best albums of that year.
While Conway and Flex appeared to get along in ’19, things have changed in 2022. On an Instagram live this week, The Machine took umbrage with media gatekeepers in Hip-Hop. In particular, he called out Funkmaster Flex by name. “New York, in my opinion, man you gotta get them old ni**as up out the way like [Funkmaster] Flex and them ni**as, man,” said the artist who released God Don’t Make Mistakes earlier this year. “Them gatekeepers that you got up there man that’s trying to dictate like who, you know what I’m saying? Like c’mon bruh. Good thing I don’t need y’all ni**as ’cause if I needed y’all ni**as, y’all ni**as would be fake-stifling my groove.”

The Drumtalk Records founder vented frustrations that DJs, particularly at radio, snub his music despite fandom. “Y’all don’t play my sh*t. [DJ] Suss One, you got on Wendy William’s show on primetime TV, ni**a and said what you said.” The popular DJ and radio host previously touted Conway as a Top 5 MC. “Flex, every chance you get you said that you gotta stand on that. We gotta get rid of y’all ni**as, man. Let some new, young, tapped in, really tapped in with the streets ass ni**as be the DJ’s and run that sh*t up there at HOT 97, ni**a and all that sh*t.”

He challenged the guard with some additional words. “You weirdo DJ ni**as think that you run New York, ni**a. Y’all is lame clowns. I hate muthaf*ckin’ the media. I hate you DJ ni**as—not all of ’em—just some of y’all ni**as in New York City, man. Y’all ni**as just be doing weirdo sh*t, bruh…like for real y’all gotta move out the way, man.”

As the live social media moment was captured, it made its way to Funkmaster Flex, among others. On Monday night (July 11), the veteran DJ/producer responded. With laughter, he tagged Conway. F.F. then said, “So? Let’s begin! You’re managed by Roc Nation (JAY-Z), signed to Shady Records (Eminem), distributed by Interscope Records (a major label).” Flex continued, “You and your team have had a feature from JAY-Z, Eminem, Lil Wayne, J. Cole, Jadakiss, Travis Scott, French Montana, and more?” Flex appeared to be pointing to Conway’s well-heeled associations. Flex also mentioned Conway’s appearance on Kanye West’s Donda and business ties to Shady Records founder (and former Def Jam Records president) Paul Rosenberg. The veteran added, “You’re a 40-plus ‘bars rapper’ sorry lyricist that has had every resource possible!”

Flex then poked fun at his own age, as it pertained to Conway’s criticism. “Signed grandpa/wheelchair bandit/warm milk general.”
In the comments of his post, Flex added that Conway was not worthy of comparing himself to The LOX. He also welcomed any other artists who are upset to step forth. “Any other rapper want some smoke tonight? Step up and get your cranium cracked?”

Flex has touted that his Tuesday night radio show will be based around this dispute. Previously, Funkmaster Flex has had public disputes with Drake, JAY-Z, Kid Capri, and others.
Earlier this year, Conway’s God Don’t Make Mistakes marked his solo major-label debut. The Eminem-executive produced LP reached #175 on the charts, a decline from 2020’s independent From A King To A GOD, which debuted at #126. That album arrived on Conway’s Drumwork and WSG’s Griselda imprint.
