Redman’s New Verse Reminds He’s A Top Storyteller

Despite going over eight years without a new album, Redman stays incredibly active. During 2023, the Def Squad MC showered fans with a series of great video freestyles to top-notch beats. He also paid a Def Jam Records homage to a Slick Rick catalog classic and put in work with Logic on College Park, dropping a very revealing verse, alongside Statik Selektah and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. These were just three examples from a prolific platinum recording artist.

In 2024, Reggie Noble has linked with Montreal production crew Potatohead People for a crispy new single. “Last Nite” sounds like something Heads may have heard from a Native Tongues act in the middle-’90s. Nick Wisdom and AstroLogical create a mellow backdrop that allows Redman to tell a semi-sordid story. “Last Nite” is currently the first song on the Ambrosia For Heads playlist (follow it here).

Last night, I had an episode / I was all in my girl’s skin like an epidural,” begins Funk Doc. The verse details an encounter complete with greenery, nosy neighbors, and dealing with police. The Brick City legend shouts out his collaborators on the song — in the story, he and his lady go grab some grub while freestyling to Potatohead People beats. There is a reverse in the story Red’ kicks.

The Gilla House leader comes back for an encore verse about good times, good lovin’, and no stress. Longtime Potatohead collaborator Kapok handles the chorus. The producers break down the song in an interesting manner in place of a third verse.

Redman has been said to be working on Muddy Waters Too, a sequel to his beloved 1996 third LP. He and Method Man are also working on Blackout! 3. Last month, Redman’s Def Squad leader, Erick Sermon, teamed with Salt n’ Pepa for a new song from his upcoming Dynamic Duos album.

“Last Nite” is issued by Bastard Jazz, the Brooklyn, New York-based label that has long worked with J Dilla’s brother Illa J as well as Tall Black Guy, Buscrates, and others.
